 The MBLP began operating in Marquette in 1889 under the administration of the City of Marquette. In 1965 the utility was placed under the jurisdiction of its own five member, publicly elected board.

The Marquette Board of Light and Power is a municipal electric utility serving approximately 17,000 customers in the city of Marquette and all or parts of nine townships in Marquette County: Marquette, Negaunee, Ishpeming, West Branch, Richmond, Chocolay, Skandia, Sands and Forsyth.

 Plant

The MBLP serves its customers from an office/ warehouse complex located at 2200 Wright Street. The administrative offices, billing department, customer service, distribution and meter departments and vehicle repair shops are all situated in this facility. The Shiras Steam Plant is located at the foot of Hampton Street and is manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The MBLP has been part of the Marquette community for over 120 years and is committed to providing reliable, cost-effective power to all its customers both today and well into the future.
