BLP adds Hybrid Electric Pickup Truck

Electric Hybrid Pckup Truck

The Marquette Board of Light and Power will be adding a Hybrid Electric Pickup Truck to its fleet in 2013 through a Department of Energy (DOE) and Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) grant program. The new “Vtruck” will have a 40 mile range in the electric-only mode and will also be able to operate using gasoline.  With gas prices averaging nearly $4/gallon the cost of operating the new pickup truck is 27 cents per mile. Based on the MBLP’s current rate for electricity, the cost to operate the new Vtruck in the electric-only mode in its 40 mile range is 3.8 cents. Over the projected eight year service life of the Vtruck, the utility expects to save approximately $12,333.
